The short answer
Grasscloth can be installed successfully in Lighthouse Point homes if the walls are properly primed or lined, the room's air conditioning is running steadily, and seams and color variation are planned before the first cut. It works best in living spaces and is a poor fit for steamy bathrooms or areas that get splashed.
Grasscloth brings texture and warmth to a room in a way printed paper can't. It is woven from natural fibers like sisal, jute, hemp or seagrass and backed with paper, and it behaves differently from vinyl or standard wallcoverings. In Lighthouse Point, where many homes sit close to the water and humidity is part of daily life, grasscloth needs careful prep, the right adhesive and an installer who knows how the material reacts to moisture. We're based in Pompano Beach, about a mile away, and we hang grasscloth in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, offices and entryways throughout the city.
Why Grasscloth Needs a Different Approach
Natural fibers absorb water. That's what gives grasscloth its look, and it's also why it is easy to stain. A smear of paste on the face of the material can leave a permanent mark, so we apply adhesive carefully, keep the front clean and avoid wiping the surface the way we would with vinyl.
Grasscloth also has visible seams and natural shade differences from strip to strip. That is normal for a handmade product, not a defect. Good installation doesn't hide that character, but it does manage it so the wall reads as intentional rather than patchy.
- Inspect every roll for run numbers, damage and shade before cutting
- Lay strips out in order to see color shifts before they go on the wall
- Follow the manufacturer's guidance on reversing alternate strips when recommended
- Plan seam placement so the most noticeable joints fall in less visible spots
Humidity and South Florida Weather
The area around Fort Lauderdale has a tropical climate with no fully dry season. From May through October it is hot, humid and wet, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. November into April is warmer and drier, which can make it a comfortable window for interior projects, though grasscloth can be hung any time of year with the right conditions inside the house.
What matters most is the indoor environment. We ask that the air conditioning run consistently for a day or two before installation and while the adhesive cures. The rolls should sit in the room ahead of time so they adjust to the temperature and humidity. If a home has been closed up with the AC off, the walls and material can hold extra moisture, which can lead to shrinking seams or lifting edges later.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. If a storm threatens or power goes out and the AC shuts down, we'd rather reschedule than hang grasscloth in a room that's heating up and getting damp.
Wall Prep: The Part You Don't See
Because grasscloth is thin and somewhat translucent in spots, the wall behind it can show through. Dark paint, patched drywall or old wallpaper ghosts may be visible. We repair and smooth the surface, then apply a wallcovering primer suited to the material. On walls with uneven color or past damage, we often recommend a liner paper first, which gives a uniform base and makes future removal easier.
Many Lighthouse Point homes have been updated over time, and older walls may have texture, previous wallpaper or patches from earlier renovations. We look at each wall before quoting the work so prep is part of the plan, not a surprise.
Choosing the Right Rooms
Grasscloth is a great fit for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, home offices and accent walls behind a bed or sofa. It also works well on ceilings and in stairwells when handled carefully.
We generally steer homeowners away from using it in full bathrooms with showers, kitchen backsplash areas, mudrooms or any spot where it will get wet or touched constantly. A powder room without a shower can work if ventilation is good and you accept that the material will show wear over time.
