The short answer
Grasscloth installation in Wilton Manors needs careful wall prep, roll-by-roll color planning, and clean pasting so the natural fiber face isn't stained. We help you choose the right rooms, plan seams around South Florida's humidity, and hang each panel so the variation looks deliberate.
Grasscloth brings texture and warmth to a room in a way printed paper can't, but it is one of the least forgiving wallcoverings to hang. It is made from natural fibers such as sisal, jute, hemp, or arrowroot woven onto a paper backing. Every roll varies a little in color, the seams always show to some degree, and the face can stain if paste or water touches it. We install grasscloth in Wilton Manors homes, about 8 miles south of our base in Pompano Beach. We plan the layout, prepare the walls, and handle the material so the finished room looks intentional.
Why Grasscloth Needs a Different Approach
Standard vinyl or paper wallpaper is printed, so pattern and color stay consistent from roll to roll. Grasscloth is a natural product. Fibers are dyed and woven by hand or machine, and slight shifts in tone are part of its character. If panels are hung in the order they come out of the box with no planning, you can end up with a stripe effect or a visible color jump across a wall.
The face also can't be wiped like vinyl. A smear of paste or a drip of water can leave a permanent mark on the fibers, so we paste the backing only and keep the face clean through the whole job.
- Check that all rolls share the same batch or run number before cutting
- Unroll and compare panels side by side to sort them by shade
- Plan which panels go on the most visible wall and which go behind furniture or doors
- Reverse alternate panels when the manufacturer recommends it, to reduce edge shading
Wall Prep for Grasscloth in Wilton Manors Homes
Grasscloth is thin enough that some wall flaws show through, and its paper backing absorbs moisture. Before hanging, we check the walls for patches, old adhesive, gloss paint, and uneven texture. Textured walls are common in South Florida homes, and they usually need to be skimmed smooth or covered with a liner so the grasscloth lies flat.
We then apply a wallcovering primer suited to the material. Primer controls how fast the paste soaks in, helps the panels stay put while seams are set, and makes future removal much easier. Skipping this step is one of the main reasons grasscloth lifts or bubbles later.
Planning Around South Florida Humidity
Our area has a tropical climate with no fully dry season. May through October is hot, humid, and wet, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. November into April is warmer and drier. Humidity affects how natural fibers and paper backings expand, contract, and dry, so we pay attention to indoor conditions on install day.
We ask that your air conditioning run normally before and after the install so the room is at a steady temperature and humidity level. If you are planning work during the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, it helps to build in some flexibility. A storm or power outage can mean rescheduling so panels can acclimate and dry properly.
Choosing the Right Rooms for Grasscloth
Grasscloth works best in rooms with low moisture and light traffic. Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, home offices, and accent walls behind a bed or sofa are all good fits. It is generally not a good choice for full bathrooms, kitchen backsplash areas, laundry rooms, or spots where kids and pets brush against the wall.
If you love the look but want it somewhere damp, ask us about grasscloth-look vinyls. They mimic the woven texture and hold up better to moisture and cleaning.
- Good fits: accent walls, dining rooms, bedrooms, offices, ceilings in dry rooms
- Use with caution: powder rooms with a working exhaust fan and no shower
- Better avoided: showers, full baths, kitchens near the sink or stove, mudrooms
What to Expect on Install Day
We start by confirming the layout with you, including where the first panel goes and where the final seam will land. Then we cut and sort the panels, paste them with a clean method that keeps adhesive off the face, and trim around outlets, windows, and trim. Grasscloth seams are butted, not overlapped, and we roll them gently so the fibers aren't crushed.
Please clear furniture away from the walls and remove wall art ahead of time. We keep leftover pieces for you, since a matching scrap from the same batch is the best option for a future small repair.
