The short answer
Grasscloth can be installed successfully in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea homes if the walls are properly prepared, the material is acclimated to indoor conditions, and the installer handles natural fibers without getting paste on the face. Expect visible seams and color variation between panels. Those are traits of the material, not installation flaws.
Grasscloth brings texture and warmth that printed paper can't match. That same natural character makes it one of the least forgiving wallcoverings to hang. In a beachside town like Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, humid air, bright sun, and salt exposure add to the challenge. Custom Wallpaper Installer is based in Pompano Beach, about 5 miles north, and we hang grasscloth in homes throughout this part of Broward County. This page covers what makes grasscloth different, how coastal conditions affect it, and what to expect when we install it in your home.
Why Grasscloth Needs a Different Approach
Grasscloth is woven from plant fibers such as sisal, jute, or hemp, laminated to a paper backing. Because each strand is natural, color and texture shift from roll to roll and even within a single strip. The seams almost always show. A skilled installer can't hide them, but can make them straight, tight, and evenly placed so they read as part of the design.
The material also stains easily. A drop of paste or a wipe with a wet sponge can leave a permanent mark on the fibers. That rules out many habits that work fine with vinyl or printed paper, and it's the main reason grasscloth installations go wrong.
- Paste stays on the backing only, and the face is never wiped with water
- Panels are checked for shade and run numbers before cutting
- Strips are hung in sequence so color shifts feel gradual instead of abrupt
- Layouts are planned so seams avoid focal points where possible
Coastal Humidity and Grasscloth
South Florida has no fully dry season. From May through October, the air is hot, humid, and wet, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. November into April is warmer and drier. Natural fibers and paper backings absorb moisture, so they can expand, shrink, or lift at the edges as indoor humidity changes.
Before we hang anything, we ask how the home is cooled and whether the air conditioning runs steadily. Grasscloth does best in rooms with consistent climate control. We let the rolls sit in the room before installation so they adjust to the conditions they'll live in. Rooms that stay damp, such as full bathrooms with showers or spaces near frequently opened sliding doors, may not suit grasscloth. If so, we'll tell you plainly and talk through alternatives.
Sunlight, Salt Air, and Wall Placement
Many homes in an oceanside town get strong light through large windows and glass doors. Natural dyes and undyed fibers can fade or yellow with steady direct sun. When you choose a wall, think about how much afternoon light hits it. Window film or shades can help protect it.
Walls near frequently opened doors to a patio or balcony see more salt air and moisture. We look at each wall before you commit to a product and point out any spots that may wear faster.
How We Prepare Walls and Hang Grasscloth
Grasscloth shows what's underneath it less than thin papers do, but poor prep still causes trouble. Loose paint, old adhesive, or patched drywall can lead to bubbles and lifting seams, especially in humid months. We repair and smooth the surface, then apply a primer made for wallcoverings. The primer helps the paste grip and makes future removal easier.
During installation, we measure and cut carefully, trim with fresh blades so the fibers don't fray, and keep hands and tools clean. Many grasscloth products are hung with reversed or straight panels depending on the manufacturer's directions, and we follow those instructions closely.
- Inspect walls and note any moisture concerns
- Repair, sand, and prime with a wallcovering primer
- Acclimate rolls and check for shade variation
- Plan layout and seam placement with you
- Hang, trim, and clean up, keeping paste off the fiber face
Scheduling Around Storm Season
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. If a storm threatens, power outages can shut off air conditioning and send indoor humidity climbing. That can be hard on freshly hung grasscloth while the paste cures. When we can, we plan installations so the home has steady climate control for several days afterward. If a storm is in the forecast, we may suggest moving the date.
