The short answer
Custom Wallpaper Installer installs accent walls in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea homes and condos, from wall selection and surface prep through the final seam. Because this beach town stays humid much of the year, we focus on moisture-tolerant materials, careful priming, and indoor climate control so the wallpaper stays flat and tight.
An accent wall is one of the simplest ways to change how a room feels without redoing the whole space. In Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, where many homes sit close to the ocean and stay humid for much of the year, getting that one wall right depends on more than picking a pattern you like. Custom Wallpaper Installer is based about 5 miles north in Pompano Beach, and we install accent walls for homes and condos throughout this small Broward County town. This page covers how we approach a single-wall project here: choosing the right wall, picking materials that suit a coastal home, preparing the surface, and planning around the local weather.
Choosing the Right Wall in a Beach-Town Home
The best accent wall is usually the one your eye lands on first when you walk into the room. In many Lauderdale-by-the-Sea living rooms, that's the wall behind the sofa or the one facing the entry. In bedrooms, it's typically the wall behind the headboard. In dining areas, a wall framed by a light fixture or a long sideboard works well.
We also look at what each wall is dealing with. A wall that takes strong afternoon sun through a sliding glass door may fade certain papers faster. An exterior wall facing the water can run cooler or damper than an interior partition. A wall shared with a bathroom may see more moisture. We walk through these trade-offs with you before you commit to a pattern, so the wall you pick looks good and holds up.
Materials That Suit Coastal Humidity
South Florida has no fully dry season. From May through October it's hot, humid and wet, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. November into April is drier, but the air still carries plenty of moisture this close to the coast. Some wallpapers handle that better than others.
For most accent walls here, we recommend materials that tolerate humidity and are easy to clean:
- Vinyl and vinyl-coated papers, which resist moisture and wipe clean, a good fit for kitchens, entries and rooms near the pool deck
- Non-woven papers, which are breathable, dimensionally stable and easier to remove later if you change your mind
- Peel-and-stick options for renters or short-term looks, with the caveat that adhesion can weaken in damp rooms
- Grasscloth and other natural fibers for texture, best kept in climate-controlled rooms away from direct sun and water
Surface Prep Makes or Breaks an Accent Wall
Because an accent wall draws attention, every flaw shows. Before any paper goes up, we inspect the wall for cracks, nail pops, old anchors, uneven texture and signs of past moisture. We patch and sand as needed, then apply a primer made for wallcovering, which helps the paper grab evenly and makes future removal far less damaging to the drywall.
If we find soft drywall, staining or a musty smell, we'll point it out before we proceed. Wallpaper should never be used to cover a moisture problem. In coastal homes, that kind of issue is worth addressing at the source first.
Planning Around Local Weather
Wallpaper adhesive cures best in a steady indoor environment. During the wet summer months, we ask that the air conditioning stay on and doors and windows stay closed for the day of installation and a couple of days after. That keeps the paper from expanding, shrinking or lifting at the seams while it sets.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. If a storm is approaching or your power is out, we'll reschedule rather than hang paper in a home without climate control. Many homeowners find the drier months from November into April a comfortable time for projects, but accent walls can be installed year-round with the right indoor conditions.
What to Expect on Installation Day
Most single accent walls take a day or less once prep is done. We protect your floors and furniture, remove outlet covers and switch plates, and plan the pattern layout so the design is centered on the wall and the most visible seams fall in sensible places. We match patterns carefully at every seam and trim cleanly at the ceiling, baseboards and around windows.
When we finish, we reinstall the plates, clean up, and go over basic care: how to wipe the surface, what to avoid, and how long to keep the room's climate steady. Beyond Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, we also serve nearby Wilton Manors, Oakland Park, Fort Lauderdale, Lighthouse Point and Hillsboro Beach.
