The short answer
Grasscloth can be installed beautifully in Oakland Park homes if the walls are properly prepped, the material is handled with clean, careful technique, and the rooms are chosen with South Florida humidity in mind. We plan roll order, seam placement and room conditions before the first panel goes up so the finished wall looks intentional, not patchy.
Grasscloth brings texture and warmth to a room in a way printed paper can't, but it is one of the least forgiving wallcoverings to hang. It's made from woven natural fibers such as sisal, jute, arrowroot or seagrass, laminated to a paper backing. That means visible seams, shade changes from roll to roll, and a surface that can stain if paste or water touches the front. We install grasscloth for homeowners in Oakland Park, about 7 miles southwest of our Pompano Beach base. Our approach is built around those quirks and around the humid Broward County air your walls live in.
Why grasscloth needs a different approach than standard wallpaper
With most wallpaper, a good installer can make seams nearly disappear. Grasscloth doesn't work that way. The fibers end at the edge of each strip, so every seam shows to some degree. Each panel can also look slightly lighter or darker than its neighbor. This is called paneling, and it's a normal trait of natural material, not a defect.
Instead of fighting that, we manage it. We check the rolls for consistency before hanging and keep them in sequence. We also plan where seams fall so they land in less prominent spots when the wall allows it. Some installers reverse every other strip to even out shading. Whether that helps depends on the specific product, so we check the manufacturer's instructions and test before committing.
Humidity, the seasons and your Oakland Park walls
Fort Lauderdale and the surrounding area have no fully dry season. May through October is hot, humid and wet, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. November into April is warmer and drier. Natural fibers respond to moisture in the air, and so does the paper backing and the paste. Hanging grasscloth in a room where the air conditioning has been off, or right after a storm has left the house damp, raises the risk of edges lifting or seams opening later.
We ask that the home's air conditioning run normally for a few days before and after installation, and we let the rolls sit in the room so they adjust to its conditions. During the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30, we stay flexible on scheduling. If a storm knocks out power and the house sits warm and humid, it's better to wait than to hang paper into those conditions.
Where grasscloth works in an Oakland Park home
Grasscloth is at its best in rooms with steady air and little direct contact. It isn't a good fit for every space, and we'll tell you so before you buy material.
- Good fits: living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, home offices and accent walls behind a bed or sofa.
- Use with caution: hallways and stair walls, where hands, bags and pets brush the surface.
- Generally avoid: full bathrooms with showers, laundry rooms and kitchen backsplash areas, where steam and splashes can stain or loosen the fibers.
- Watch the sun: strong light through west- or south-facing windows can fade some natural dyes over time. Shades or UV-filtering film can help.
How we install grasscloth
Clean hands and clean tools matter more with grasscloth than with almost any other wallcovering. A drip of paste on the face can leave a dark mark that won't come out.
- Inspect the walls and repair cracks, nail holes and uneven texture, since grasscloth is thin enough to show what's beneath it.
- Prime with a wallcovering primer, and add a liner paper when the surface or product calls for it.
- Check every roll for run numbers and shade, and set the hanging order before cutting.
- Paste the backing as the manufacturer directs, and keep paste off the fiber face.
- Trim with fresh blades so the fibers cut cleanly instead of fraying at ceilings, baseboards and outlets.
Getting ready for your install day
A little preparation on your end helps the job go smoothly and keeps your new walls looking right.
- Order enough material from the same production run, plus extra for pattern planning and future repairs.
- Clear furniture away from the walls and take down art, shelves and window treatments.
- Keep the air conditioning running at your normal setting.
- Plan to keep pets and kids out of the room while panels are drying.
