The short answer
Grasscloth installation in Margate starts with smooth, primed walls, usually a liner, and careful planning of panel order so color shifts and seams look intentional. The paste has to stay off the woven face, and the room should stay cool and dry while it sets. That matters most during South Florida's humid months.
Grasscloth adds texture and warmth that printed wallpaper can't copy. It is also one of the least forgiving wallcoverings to hang. It's woven from natural fibers like sisal, jute, arrowroot, or seagrass, laminated to a paper backing. That means visible seams, shade differences from panel to panel, and a face that stains if paste or water touches it. We install grasscloth in Margate homes in the 33063 ZIP code, about 7 miles west of our base in Pompano Beach. We handle each wall with the slower, more careful process this material needs. Here's what that process looks like and what to expect.
Why Grasscloth Needs a Different Approach
Each grasscloth panel is made by hand from natural fibers. No two strips match exactly, and seams don't disappear the way they do on a printed paper. A good install accepts this and plans around it rather than fighting it.
The woven face is also absorbent. A smear of paste, a wet sponge, or even a damp hand can leave a dark mark that won't come out. That changes how we cut, paste, and handle every strip. The face stays clean and dry from the roll to the wall.
- Strips are numbered and hung in the order they come off the roll to keep shade changes gradual
- Many styles are reverse-hung, flipping every other strip, to soften color differences at the seams
- Paste goes on the back only, with clean trimming tools and dry hands on the face
- Rolls from the same production run are checked before cutting, since different runs can vary noticeably
Wall Prep for Margate Homes
Grasscloth is thin enough that it shows what's underneath. Textured drywall, patched spots, and nail pops can show through the weave. Before hanging anything, we look at the wall surface and decide how much prep it needs.
Many walls need textures skimmed smooth and a wallcovering primer before grasscloth goes up. A liner paper is often hung first. It gives the grasscloth an even, absorbent base and makes the paper easier to remove later. On walls painted with a glossy finish, primer is especially important so the paste can grip.
- Checking for texture, old adhesive, and damaged drywall paper
- Skim coating or sanding where the surface is uneven
- Priming with a primer made for wallcoverings
- Hanging liner paper when the wall or the grasscloth calls for it
Humidity, Heat, and Timing
The Fort Lauderdale area has no fully dry season. May through October is hot, humid, and wet, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. November into April is warmer and drier. Natural fibers react to moisture. They can swell, shrink slightly, or open at the seams if the room swings between damp and dry while the paste cures.
For the best results, the air conditioning should run steadily before, during, and for a few days after installation. Windows and doors to the outside should stay closed. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. If a storm knocks out power and the AC stops for a long stretch, fresh grasscloth is more likely to have trouble. We keep that in mind when scheduling during those months. Projects can be planned for the drier stretch of the year when timing is flexible.
Choosing the Right Room
Grasscloth works well in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, home offices, and accent walls behind beds or built-ins. It's a poor fit for full bathrooms with showers, laundry areas, and spots near kitchen sinks. Splashes and steam can stain the face and loosen the paste.
Bright, direct sun can fade natural dyes over time. For sunny rooms, we can talk through which walls get the most light and whether shades or a different wall would be a better choice. Hallways and kids' rooms get bumps and fingerprints, and grasscloth can't be scrubbed. Higher walls or a room with less traffic usually hold up better.
Serving Margate and Nearby Cities
Margate is in Broward County, a short drive from our Pompano Beach base. We also hang grasscloth and other wallcoverings in North Lauderdale, Coconut Creek, Lauderdale Lakes, Oakland Park, and Deerfield Beach. If you've already picked a grasscloth, we can review the product and your walls before ordering is finished. That way you have enough rolls from one run to cover the space.
