The short answer
Yes, wallpaper can be removed from Hillsboro Beach homes without wrecking the drywall underneath, but it takes the right method for the paper type and the wall surface. We test first, strip carefully, wash off the adhesive, and repair any damage so your walls are ready for paint or a new covering.
Old wallpaper in a Hillsboro Beach home rarely comes off the way you'd hope. Coastal humidity, years of air conditioning cycles, and paper sometimes hung straight over unprimed drywall can leave you with torn facing, stubborn glue, and walls that need real repair before anything new goes up. Custom Wallpaper Installer is based in Pompano Beach, about 2 miles southwest of Hillsboro Beach. We remove wallpaper from single rooms, entire homes, and condo units, then leave the walls clean, smooth, and ready for paint or new paper.
Why Wallpaper Removal Is Trickier on the Coast
South Florida has no fully dry season. From May through October the air is hot, humid and wet, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and even the cooler months from November into April carry more moisture than most of the country. In a home close to the ocean, that moisture works its way into wallpaper seams and adhesive over time.
The result is paper that behaves unpredictably. Some sections peel off in sheets, while others have bonded tightly to the wall. Seams may lift near bathrooms, kitchens, and exterior walls, and you may find discoloration or mildew behind the paper that wasn't visible before. Removal has to account for all of this rather than following a one-size approach.
How We Remove Wallpaper
Every job starts with a test area. We check what kind of paper you have and how the wall underneath was prepared, because that decides the method. Vinyl-coated paper, older paper hung in several layers, and paper applied directly to bare drywall each need a different technique.
Our general process looks like this:
- Protect floors, trim, cabinets, and furniture, and shut off power to outlets and switches in the work area
- Remove outlet covers, vent covers, and other hardware
- Strip the top layer of vinyl paper dry where possible, or score the surface so solution can reach the backing
- Soften the remaining backing and adhesive with warm water and a removal solution
- Scrape gently to avoid gouging the drywall face
- Wash the walls to remove leftover adhesive residue
- Let the walls dry fully before any repairs or priming
Wall Repair After Removal
Taking the paper off is only half the work. Once the wall is exposed, we look for torn drywall paper, dents, old anchor holes, and patches that were hidden under the wallpaper. Torn drywall facing needs to be sealed with a primer made for that purpose before it's skimmed, otherwise it can bubble when paint goes on.
We patch and skim-coat as needed, sand the surface smooth, and prime it so the wall is ready for its next finish. If we find signs of moisture or mildew behind the paper, we'll point it out so you can decide how to address it before the wall is closed up with paint or new wallpaper.
Planning Around the Weather
Humidity affects how quickly walls dry after removal and washing. During the wet season, drying can take longer, so we plan for it instead of rushing primer onto a damp surface. Running your air conditioning during and after the job helps the walls dry evenly.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. If you're scheduling work during those months, it's worth building a little flexibility into your timeline in case a storm interrupts plans. Many homeowners prefer the drier months from November into April for larger projects, but removal can be done any time of year with the right drying time.
